“Symbols are miracles we have recorded into language”
― S. Kelley Harrell

Many years ago I had a friend who had grown up in South Africa during the most oppressive years of the apartheid regime. He came from a privileged white family, and he told me a story that has stayed with me. Whenever a death was inflicted upon black activists by the regime in power, his mother and her friends, all privileged white mothers and grandmothers, would stand silently at street corners in the city wearing black arm bands. They broke no laws, they held no placards, they were motionless and silent, but their quiet, implacable opposition to the injustice of the wound festering at the heart of their country was more powerful and eloquent than any screaming, marching mob could have been. And there was nothing that the powers-that-be could do against them, as they had broken no laws, they had made no accusations, and they were after all privileged white mothers and grandmothers, but their message was received loud and clear by all who saw them.

As the calendar ticks over into July, Chiron stations direct at 28 degrees 51 minutes of Pisces. On 2 July it stations retrograde at the same degree and minute, and stays within 28 degrees of Pisces all through the month, up to the middle of August in fact. When a planet (or in this case Centaur) stations on a degree it is like a drill, boring into that degree and saying “look here, something important is happening, you need to take notice”. When it retrogrades, it is asking us to take another look at what happened when it tracked over these degrees previously – have we missed something? Was there an opportunity we overlooked? Is there an issue we are avoiding? Have a look at your chart for any planets making aspect to 28 Pisces to see how this is playing out in your life. Like the ladies on the street corners, Chiron is making a silent appeal for us to address a wound that may be festering unnoticed in our psyche.

Chiron is a wound that we carry around with us, but it is also where we can find the healing for that wound. In Pisces it is sensitive, amorphous and perhaps a little bit hard to pin down. It is a hurt that maybe we cannot define, a sense that all is not well, or it may be a searing wound that seemingly has no beginning and no perceptible end in sight. It may be something that we have been avoiding that needs to be addressed. Being in Pisces, we need to look inside, meditate and open ourselves to the higher energies that guide us.

With Chiron camping out at 28 Pisces, the faster moving planets will make aspects to it throughout the month, giving us more information about the issue it is highlighting in our lives. On 4 July Venus sextiles Chiron from Taurus, asking us to be kind to ourselves, indulge in some pampering, do something that makes us feel good and worthwhile. On 5 July it forms a Grand Water Trine with Mercury in Cancer and the Moon in Scorpio, triggering the emotions attached to the issue. Use the powerful Scorpio Moon to look deep inside knowing that Mercury in Cancer will assist a rational examination of the emotions it stirs up. On 8 July the Moon will square from Sagittarius, questioning what we believe has caused us the hurt. On 18 and 19 July Mars will trine from Cancer, followed by the Sun doing the same between 21-22 July, urging us to take action and cast some light on the issue. On 25 July Mercury will form a quincunx from Leo – have we been completely honest and emotionally truthful with ourselves or has our ego cast an intellectual “I’m OK, really I am” over the issue when the reality may be quite the opposite? Finally, on 31 July Venus squares from Gemini, giving us the opportunity to take stock of how OK we really are.

I like to look at the Sabian Symbol for planets that are doing something significant, as I find they add another dimension to a reading. The symbol for 28 degrees Pisces is “Light breaking into many colours as it passes through a prism”. I love this symbol. It is describing the spectrum of colours that make up visible light, and is aligned to the chakra system in the human body. The symbol is telling us that all issues are made up of many components which need to be examined and understood, but if we place too much emphasis on only one colour, we will lose the balance that make up the white light that we are seeking. It is asking that we look inside ourselves and examine what has hurt us in the past, to acknowledge the pain, bless it and let it go.

Fortunately for us Chiron has an ally in this quest. Chiron will form a semi-sextile to Uranus in Aries for the whole month. The semi-sextile is a minor aspect of 30 degrees, with planets occupying neighbouring signs. Like many neighbours, they have little in common with each other, but may rub along harmoniously or be at loggerheads, depending on how they choose to play the relationship.

The Sabian Symbol for 28 degrees Aries is “The Music of the Spheres” . To quote Lynda Hill* “it doesn’t matter if things are going well or not, if you are in tune with your own inner voice, this can be a time of at-one-ment or attunement with your path. Listening to the ‘Music’ around you can open up messages from your own inner voice”. If played well, Uranus in action-oriented Aries will urge Chiron to do something to move forward from the issue, perhaps providing a “bolt from the blue” insight that may have eluded us. It is up to us to open ourselves to the message. As a very talented astrologer has said many times, “remember the planets won’t make you do anything. The choice is always in your hands. They will provide the wave for you to ride, how you surf it is up to you.”

*Note: for those who are interested in exploring more about the Sabian Symbols, check out Lynda Hill’s website: sabiansymbols.com. I also highly recommend her book “The Sabian Oracle: 360 Degrees of Wisdom”. Also note that the Sabian Symbols are numbered 1 to 30, so astrological degrees and minutes are rounded up to the next whole number making the symbols referred to above 29 Pisces and 29 Aries in the book.
